SWHJ NO 15: Spring 2008
An evocative picture by the noted artist Dibdin fronts the spring issue of the Saffron Walden Historical Journal. The picture shows the long-lost windmill at Sewards End, accompanied by an article by Geoffrey Ball, recalling the various windmills which could once be found in and around Walden, and are now completely gone.

Other lost buildings, recalled in an article by Bruce Munro, include some of the stately homes which were once such a feature of this part of Essex. A more modern built environment is described in Zofia Everett's study of the evolution of the Gibson Gardens estate, from its time as the garden of a wealthy 19th century philanthropist into the 20th century metamorphosis into an estate of character and significant architectural merit.

On a more rural theme, the Journal also carries an extract from the remarkable new book by Sarah Casbolt about her father's memories of Littlebury Green in times past, and similarly the memories of Ray Carter, a former MP and government minister, of his wartime childhood in Manuden.

Other articles include an extract from Jeremy Collingwood's forthcoming book about the life and times of George Stacey Gibson - Journal readers can obtain a discount on the book using the leaflet inside.

Together with items of history news, including the landmark restoration of the Cliff Stacey Albums at the Town Library, and colour centre pages, the Journal is proving increasingly popular, the last two issues having sold out. Published by the Saffron Walden Historical Society, the Journal costs £2.50 at various outlets including Waitrose, the TIC, Lankester Antiques, Saffron Walden Museum and Newport shop, or with the addition of postage, £3.20 from The Treasurer, 9 High Street, Saffron Walden.
